The “King of Spam” Arrested!

Robert Soloway

Robert Alan Soloway, a Washington state resident, who is known as the “King of Spam” was one of the world’s most prolific spammers and is now behind bars. Federal Authorities say that his arrest could lead to a drop in spam email throughout the world. Soloway is accused of using compromised computer networks to send out millions and millions of spam emails. The Federal Court charged him with mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering and Soloway has plead not guilty to those charges. The government has seized his four bank accounts but even still he is still paying for his own lawyer. Soloway was said to have been living in a fancy apartment and drove a expensive Mercedes convertible. He has been sending out spam email since 2003 and continued doing so after Microsoft won a $7 million civil judgment against him in 2005 and a small Internet service provider in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment against him. Soloway’s activities came into light after several complaints were received against Soloway who is listed on the list kept by The Spamhaus Project which is an international anti-spam organization. The Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services said it was spending close to $4000 a month to protect against spam along with several other businesses that claimed a loss of reputation due to the false appearance that the spam originating from their businesses. Robert Soloway would prey on naive business owners who would buy into his marketing campaign thinking that they were hiring an ethical marketing company. His company, Newport Internet Marketing Corporation, would also promote websites that they themselves controlled. Clicking on the link inside one of these spam emails would create a redirection to Soloways website where he claimed he could send out 20 million advertisements over the period of 15 days for $495. It seems like good news to the majority of us who don’t like spam in our emails. I have a pretty strong spam filter through which only 3-4 emails get through daily which isn’t much of a hassle. Its good to see progression in terms of spam reduction from the source of the spam itself. I think this is one step in the right direction but thinking about it again, he was one of the top 10 spammers meaning that there are 9 others out there that are just as bad or worse in the way they conduct their spamming operation. His arrest will mean slightly less spam for everyone around the world, which is music to my ears! Below is a link to the SpamHaus Project Page with Robert Solloway’s details.

Gates & Jobs Share the Stage

At the D5 conference Steve Jobs and Bill Gates shared the stage Wednesday night for a rare joint appearance. Two Wall Street journalists, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, joined them for a rare chat. The video is provided below and is very interesting how they interact together. For any technology-inclined individual, such as myself, its always impressive to see both these computer moguls and to see them together is even more exciting. I would have loved to see the entire thing in person but maybe some other time. Hope you guys enjoy this because I sure did!

Palm Foleo - a Smart Phone Companion

Palm Foleo

At D5 Palm flaunted its new Palm Foleo device which is a companion for its smart phone devices. Priced at around $500, featuring a cell phone sized charger and a Thinkpad like pointer, its going to be interesting to see how far the “Foleo” really goes. As far as looks, its quite sleek however don’t be fooled, this is a smart phone companion meaning it synchronizes with your smart phone through bluetooth and then allows you to work with documents, write emails and of course browse the web on a larger more robust screen. The Foleo comes with one touch email access, an opera web browser, wifi and Word, Excel and Powerpoint editors built in, along with a PDF reader. As far as connectivity options you will have available a USB port, a video-out port, a headphone jack, and SD and CompactFlash memory card slots. Currently there is only support for Palm’s Treo models however Palm hopes to close the gap by seeing interactivity of the unit with others such as Windows Mobile, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Apple. It doesn’t function like a regular laptop and is targeted towards business individuals who are looking for a little more functionality with portability in mind. Although the $500 price tag is in the range of some rather low-end laptops, it seems a little unplanned to me. The reason people purchase the Treo is because of its size that allows for high productivity keeping portability in mind and even though the Foleo is only 2.5lbs in weight, the reason for carrying around a smart phone companion seems likely an unlikely combination. Its a fantastic concept however it would be more likely that an individual who uses their Smart phone frequently for emails, editing and web browsing would find a need for the Foleo. It would be more interesting to see the Foleo as a standalone product such as NEC’s MobilePro as the Foleo does seem like it has a lot going for it.

Youtube on Apple TV? Yes, its true!

Apple TV - Youtube

At D5 (or the fifth edition of D:All Things Digital), Steve Jobs revealed that around mid-june Apple TV will be adding a new menu item, namely You Tube. With the deal going through, Apple TV users will now be able to select Youtube from the menu and be able to watch thousands of Youtube videos instantly. Ideally, Apple TV would connect to a television that would allow them to watch content that was purchased or downloaded from the internet with the use of a Mac or PC but with the addition of Youtube, this will allow functionality of the system to improve dramatically. Usually the content that was being watched on Apple TV used to be tv shows or movies that were purchased from Apple’s Itunes store, but not anymore! Apple has created a plugin for the Apple TV product called “A Series of Tubes” which will allow the playing of Youtube Videos on the device. Apple has also designed a “hook” into Youtube that will allow Apple TV customers to view videos that have been converted into the h.264 standard. As the conversion process progresses on Youtube to get more and more videos standardized to the h.264, the process is said to be complete later this year. This news comes along with further news that Apple is going to release a 160GB version of Apple TV that will be available this Thursday. The current version sports a 40GB Hard Drive and costs $299 whereas the new 160GB version will only cost a $100 more, a total of $399. At an impressive price and a good alliance in place, Apple should see quite a stir resulting from such news.

New Features on Enkay Blog

May 30th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in General, Other Reviews, Website Reviews

Well if you havent seen it already, Im going to shed some light on the new “Get Reviewed” page. I recently got accepted by ReviewMe and PayPerPost and what this means is that I get offers to review websites, softwares, etc. I decided that since my blog has seen some success since its start that I would start offering reviews on my own for starters. This is just a marketing move for right now because as the blog start getting more and more visitors, i will do away with “Get Reviewed” however the reviews I have written will still remain. Currently the going price for these reviews is a mere $5 which is less that what i get offered at the pay-per-post websites. The reason for this is because I’d like to provide more exposure to those who arent members of ReviewMe or PayPerPost. You can access the page from the navigation menu or the neatly designed graphic located on the right of the page. Also, the Agloco text link has now been converted to a graphic link which should hopefully draw more attention to it. I am in the process of fixing the smaller details of the system and want to make it a little more appealing to the eye with an idea of making a change only for the better! Let me know your thoughts on this.

Update: The bidvertiser ad unit has also been removed because it wasnt really working with the design and so maybe later on it may be back up again but for now, im going to leave that space the way it is in the hopes that I would add something else down there. Any suggestions?
