Wordpress Blogs on iPhone or iPod Touch?

June 29th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Blog, Make Money Online, Other Reviews, Videos

Have you happened to think about what happens to the iPhone and iPod Touch users when they visit your blog? Well, if you don’t know, let me explain. Basically, the entire page is loaded up and fitted to a 3.5″ display. In order to read your posts they have to use their fingers to zoom in on the post and scroll side to side. Doesn’t that sound somewhat boring?

Well, theres a twist because theres a plug-in called WPtouch by BraveNewCode that will make life a lot easier for your iPhone and iPod Touch users. What this plug-in essentially does is, it automatically displays your blog in an iPhone compatible theme when it recognizes that the user is using an iPhone or iPod Touch.

It also allows them to switch between the customized iPhone view or the Normal View so its easy to flip back if they rather see it in normal view. The best part is that its highly customizable from the Wordpress Admin panel. The plug-in was really simple to install and just needed to be activated for it to work.

To demonstrate, I whipped out my Flip Mino and did a small tutorial on an iPod Touch.

So now that you realize what this can do for your readers, you may want to install WPtouch . The reason is that very soon there will be a large number of iPhone and possibly iPod Touch users and you wouldnt want to disappoint them by having them zoon into portions of your blog. Many major websites such as FatWallet, Facebook, Google and even Twitter have an iPhone specific design. So if you want to keep up with the times, add this plug-in and make life a little more easier for your iPhone and iPod Touch users.

Note: I apologize for the brightness issues with the Touch. It seemed as though if I made it brighter it wasnt too clear but if I lowered the brightness then it would act as a mirror of everything else but the screen. Hopefully its clear enough considering I dont have any fancy lenses or anything.

Peel Away Ad - FREE!

June 26th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Blog

Yes thats right, its Free. I know that many of you have noticed the Peel Away ad in the corner of all my pages for Market Leverage. Sadly, I actually paid for the script that I am using as its the same one that John Chow had recommended which costs around $30-$40. Aside from spending the money to buy this great script, I realized that there could have been an alternative that I may have overlooked.

I looked around the internet a little bit and came across something called PageEar. Its essentially the same thing and will not cost you a dime. Its also a good form of advertising as its not irritating to a reader unless they hover over it. The fact that it hides away and that it is quite large, will bring more hits and makes it all the more effective.

Here is a link to PageEar’s Home page

If you are considering Peel Away Ads then definitely give that a shot. if you are not as satisfied then shoot me and email and I’ll send you a link to where I purchased mine from. (Its not an affiliate link but I’ll have to find the link for you!). Anyway, hope you liked this short post! Have a great weekend!

Upgrading To Wordpress

June 22nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Blog, General, Make Money Online

I decided to take the plunge yesterday and upgrade to the new wordpress. I was still running on Wordpress 2.1.3 and because of the security issue, I decided to upgrade. My only concern was that some plugins may or may not work plus the extremely large database I had. I actually wonder how many people have not as yet upgraded, but anyway, I figured it has been long enough, so, lets see how I did it.

STEP 1: The first thing I did was create a directory on the blog and installed the new wordpress in it.
STEP 2: Then, I created a new database for this and transferred my old tables to this new database. This is pretty much like creating a back up.

How To Create a Backup
The way you do it is you log into PHPMyAdmin and click on “Export”. Make sure that in the Export box to the left you have all the tables selected and the SQL radio button is selected. Then make sure the checkbox next to structure is selected and select the following values - “Add DROP TABLE, Add AUTO_INCREMENT value, Enclose table and field names with backquotes”. Moving on to the Data section, just be sure that the checkbox next to data is checked. Then the last step is to select Save As File and hit go. There you go, your back up is created!

How To Import Your Old Tables
This is quite simple. All you do is go back into PHPMyAdmin and select Import. Click on browse and select the SQL file you just saved and hit go and thats about it!

STEP 3: Moving on, as soon as all that was done, I transferred over any files in the old directory to the new wordpress that led to a short period of downtime (3 minutes).
STEP 4: Lastly I renamed the old folder into something else and CHMOD it so that it cannot be read or accessed and renamed the folder with the new Wordpress in it to the old folder name and my new Wordpress blog was Live!

It didn’t really take too long so if you are a little cautious like me, try this method out and let me know what you think. It probably took me 20 minutes with all the file transfer and importing of database, included.

I have another post coming up to help some of you who use the LIVE plugin like I do. It will definitely be interesting so watch for it.

As for now, I am pretty excited to be on the new Wordpress. I dont know how many of you still use the old one but its not too bad.

Syed’s Issue With The New Wordpress
Syed over at Balkhis.com noticed a problem with Wordpress that he needs a little help with that I thought was quite interesting as I hadn’t noticed it. See if you have the same probelm.

Congratulations to Nick at RomanDock.com!
Nick is a great contributor at this blog and he won the John Chow’s bag of Market Leverage Stuff so Congrats Nick!

Quintin’s Monitor Giveaway
Quintin Riis tis giving away a pretty cool monitor over at his blog so I figured I would blog about it. I think its a great season of Giveaways if you havent already noticed all the market leverage contests going on!

Well thats all for now, Hope you enjoyed my post!

I was reading Gizmodo today as I came across a video from 1983 of an Apple Event hosted by Steve Jobs. The three eligible bachelors were Fred Gibbons from Software Publishing Corp., Mitch Kapor from Lotus Development and ofcourse Bill Gates from Microsoft. I can’t tell you who won so you’ll have to watch this video to decide!
