Blogging & Time Management
Its hard to imagine how some people manage their busy work schedules and maintain an informative blog at the same time. I am a full-time student as many of you know, and university had its first day of classes yesterday. Yay! It may not exactly be the happiest moment of my life, but it made me think about how I will be allocating my time to be sure to contribute to my blog on a daily basis.
Currently my class schedule pretty much looks like Monday thru Thursday 10am to 7pm. Thats around 9 hours a day and it can be stressful considering I am a junior now but that doesn’t mean that I won’t be blogging anymore. I have started to put time aside on a daily basis to write posts so that I can be sure to keep this blog alive.
In such a short time the blog has attained so much success, that letting it loose even for a short while can be a big mistake. I couldn’t even wait patiently for my domain transfer to go through and it made me realize how attached I had gotten to my blog in only 3 short months. Either way, I decided that its time for me to show people that having a heavy load of school work shouldn’t be an excuse to start getting detached from your blog although I have to agree that with exams it can get difficult at times. Either way, lets see how you can manage your time.
1) Create a Schedule – This is probably the simplest way to allocate your time. I use Microsoft Outlook on a daily basis to keep track of appointments, assignments and exams as well as other things that may pop up from time to time. Creating a schedule lets you know what you have to do, when you have to do it and how much time it can possibly take. For example, since I know that i have class till 7, I figure that once I am home by about 8pm, I will have a little free time before midnight where I can write a post for my blog. Your schedule will help you accomplish your daily tasks as well as help you create time for other things on your agenda that would usually get overlooked.
2) Timestamp your Posts – Another easy way is to use the “Post Timestamp” feature on your posts. Say you get free time during the day and you feel like blogging but you have already written your average of 2 posts for the day. Well, don’t let that idea slip away, be sure to write the post and set the “Post Timestamp” for a day and time that you feel is appropriate. That way, you will have a post already in the pipeline for that day, but also you won’t have to worry about losing your great idea for a post! Most popular bloggers do it all the time and doing so is acceptable for posts that are timeless. “Timeless” means that they aren’t news stories and being delayed by a day or two won’t affect the impact the post would have if it were published earlier.
3) Topic Brainstorming – Most people may tell you that coming up with the right thing to talk about can be the root of the problem. If you are one of those types of people then take a few minutes during your lunch break and think about something that people will want to read about. For example, this topic came out of a little thinking regarding my college schedule. Once you have a good topic on your hands, write it down because you never know when it may come in handy. You could blog about it today or a week from today, but you will have it posted at some time. I do a few topic brainstorms and can come up with 5-10 topics within about 15 minutes! Try it for yourself, it really works!
Hopefully this post helps you guys who are like me and may have a pretty busy and tight schedule. Its not difficult to make time for your blog, its just time consuming! You have to realize that some things need to be done regardless and blogging is something that you cannot ignore for too long otherwise you will be left out in the cold. So, lets get to blogging! Hope you guys enjoyed the post and let me know how you manage your time during your busy lives!
