I Have a Bone to Pick
As you all know, I am a big car guy and I have test driven a wide variety of cars and I generally critique cars – whether I like them or dislike them – even if I own them.
Now before I start talking about the image above, I just want to clarify that I own a Toyota and I actually like the Scion lineup. The problem that I have is I wonder, I really really wonder why Toyota — or better said, the designers of the xB decided that it might be better to design the car with only one reverse light as you can see from the image above.
As you probably know, most cars have two lights that turn on when you switch to reverse. Well, in the Scion xB you’d think something was wrong when only one light would turn on – which is on the lowest left hand corner. I just think its a really weird set up and its sort of a design flaw in my opinion.
Honestly, I don’t even own an xB and as a consumer I feel that I’m getting jipped off! I just thought it would be interesting today to talk about some things that interest me personally – it might not be a big deal but I still think its something I should get off my chest!
I hope you liked this short post and I just wanted to see what your opinions would be about this – do you think there is a specific reason why there is only one reverse light? or is that just something that needs to be fixed? I just want to see if anyone else thinks this is as weird as I do. Have a good weekend!

Yeah that is quite a strange move on Scion’s part. To me it seems like they completely forgot about reverse lights and simply added this one afterwards to meet import requirements. Or perhaps there were issues with also putting a reverse light on the right side. It doesn’t make sense to me though.
Hi Enkay, I had to look at the picture twice because I couldn’t believe it. Yet there it was, one back-up light not only does it look strange but it’s very weird especially on Scion’s part…I think it’s definitely a flaw and someone is probably out of a job right now. I’d be interested to see what some of the magazines might say about it like Popular Mechanics or any of the Car Mags. I think it’s always good to get things off of ones chest from time to time…it free’s your mind.

I’m at a loss for words. I’m guessing this isn’t illegal, then?
I would have assumed that there would be standards in place requiring at least two lights or a minimum size rating for lights in place.
Thanks to know u that you are very crazy about the car and love very much them but about me link maruti esteem.
I doubt this would be a legal issue. If it were, those vehicles would never make it into the country. Customs has strict regulations regarding imported vehicles, especially ones meant to be street legal.
Scion has been involved in some really weird ideas such as cube design, but this got me slumped. This could be trouble if backing up at an angle on the side with no reverse light , I know you live in NY and can relate with me on that one (Brooklyn) lol
Most cars in Japan and Europe do have a single reverse light. Most new vehicles only have one reverse light now a days.
i wonder why ?
If this is a trend in all newer vehicles perhaps it is nothing but a cost saving measure. By only putting one reverse light in all vehicles it must add up to a huge total savings. It’s not like a consumer would insist on paying less if their vehicle only has 1 brake light.
I don’t really understand the logic behind it either. What if the left side of the car is blocked from view by another car or something? People behind won’t be able to know you’re reversing and it could be a safety hazard. Not to mentioning the positioning of the light that low is also flawed to begin with.
Till then,
Jean
