Pros & Cons of Video Blog Posts!
I have always been a big fan of having video posts on blogs but I wonder, how helpful can they be. If you think about it, you might say, well a reader might stay on your blog longer if there is a video to watch but how often can you have a video that is interesting and will make your readers stay? I probably can’t answer that question but it depends on how popular your content is and whether or not your videos are any good in the first place. I have thought about having a video blog post on the blog sometime in the future and I just wanted to know what your thoughts would be on that. Would you ever consider having a video post on your blog?
Pros – Lets take a look at some of the positive things that result from a video post:
1) Visual Appeal: Aside from reading your blog post which gives information, people like watching videos. For example, would you rather read a book or watch a movie on the book? Some might go either way but the movie might be something that most people might pick. Video blog posts allow you to make things a little more interesting for your readers.
2) Personal Connection: When your readers see you in a video clip and how you talk and behave, they will be able to connect with you more because they can feel your emphasis on certain things and probably even pay attention to what you have to say more closely.
3) Better Transfer of Information: A lot of people are very visual and if you have a well designed video, then you could provide that information in a manner that will help your readers in retaining the information and that is a big plus.
Cons – Well those are the positives but what about the negatives, well lets take a look shall we?
1) Time Consuming- Making a video can be quite time consuming, considering that nothing is perfect on the first try and that you might actually have several re-takes before you get the information down right, unless you are a great impromptu speaker and you are able to nail it in the first try.
2) Editing Knowledge- Some people may not have knowledge about transferring video and editing it to be able to make it look more presentable and professional. The last thing your readers want to see is a poorly edited video with bad lighting.
3) Information Display- Sometimes, when you write a post, people can always come back and read it and use it as a reference but in the caes that you have a video, they would have to search the video for information they need and using the “search box” will not help them either. You have to be clever in how you present the information to your audience.
Well those were the pros and cons of having video blog posts on your blog and hopefully once the weather gets better in Texas, I will put together a video blog post but in the mean time let me know your thoughts on how much you like or dislike video posts. Thanks for reading guys!

I think they can be nice as long as you don’t overdo them. For example, they work good for announcing contest winners and such. I think if you want to try them, maybe only 1 per week or so. Although, this doesn’t count the approximately 1 YouTube video per week that you should be alloted for entertainment purposes

Do you know any good video editing software, I wanted to make a video for myself.

hey enkay! i really like this post, and you touch on a lot of good points. as for your cons, here is my feedback.
con 1: just like blogging, you’ll have to give yourself some time for the initial learning curve, but once you find your flow, you could have a really great product.
con 2: again, learning curve… gary and i did experience the “lighting” dilemma but we made do and did what we could, and it’s one thing to tackle on our check list for next time. each time you’ll be taking away another lesson, so i don’t see that as a negative.
con 3: i have to give it up to nate whitehill and josh mullineaux for re-capping their video posts in text format, including links to references and using short summaries. this is a great way also for people to know what to expect, and be able to find the post again in the future when searching.
i think the strongest pro is #2, creating a personal connection with your readers. i think it makes the blog that much more compelling when you can see the author in action.
great post!

I’m pretty sure that if you make your video very catchy and add something interactive such as music and then prove your point clearly, then you will get many interested viewers.

Hey Danielle! Thanks for the feedback. I definitely agree that pretty much most of the cons have a learning curve and it will take a while before people can churn out good videos. Gary Lee’s video had the editing down to each frame and it was well done, lighting was an issue but the video was still entertaining and kept my attention, so it worked well. I think that re-capping video posts in text format is a great way to solve the “search” dilemma. Thanks again for stopping by!

I’ll probably do them once a month if anything just for entertainment and to not have people bored out of their mind, but lets see, I need some free time to make it in the first place!

I don’t have video editing knowledge either, but that’s not stopping me. I think of it as a new challenge and a new skill to learn that makes you more valuable to any company that might want to hire you.
What is stopping me is that I don’t have a video camera. I could teach my self the skills for free, but I’m not quite talented enough to build a video camera and I don’t have the money to buy one

yups it’s true, i think big majority of users can’t watch any other kind of videos on workplace.

this is definitely where creativity comes into play
can you borrow one from someone or from your/a friend’s school? i’d love to see you do a video blog post!

Good thought, I could probably snag one from the school. I’ll have to keep that in mind and see if I can come up with something to merit a video post.

I dont really like video blogging. I prefer to read, and never actually look at any blog posts with videos.
