I agree with most of this, but of course with my own takes

As far as the link at the end of the post (like a forum signature) my opinion would be that it has no place and to just leave it out.

Post links are fine and dandy and OK – even encouraged perhaps as long as they are relevant (like in your example) and so long as every comment you post is not that way (make it an occasional thing) and be sure the anchor text is a relevant phrase in the comment and not the entire thing…perhaps to “fix” your example, use the ‘check it out’ part instead

I don’t mind comments for the sake of commenting as long as they are relevant and meaningful (no “great post” type comments)and if you are creating controversy or disagreeing, be giving your true and honest opinion but do it tactfully and don’t incite riot and flame wars

Oh, and one other thing, use a name or nickname in comments rather than a site name or keywords

It happens when people stop by and don’t really read the entire post but they just want to say something so that their blog gets noticed and if all I have to say is “great post” then I usually don’t say anything.

Yeah, I completely dislike comments like that but I get them quite a bit! I have hundreds and thousands of spam comments, so its depressing to have to look through that every once in a while.

I love it! Especially the whole hyperlinked sentence! I see people commenting just for the sake of doing it, with nothing intelligent to say or, like you said…un-needed controversy.

I like to add to the conversation, and at least say more than “great post, I agree”. There are spammers that are getting smarter too….they say just enough to appear as though it’s a legit comment, but not enough to be a spammer.

I takes some learning to spot them, but I’m getting pretty good lol. They’ve tricked me a couple times though.

Then they put the same exact comment on a blog to which I’m subscribed to the comments! Then I spam them!

I think this is good to bring up every once in awhile. Everyone needs to be reminded of their manners (I’m assuming everyone has at least the smallest amount to begin with, of course). Just yesterday, I rec’d a comment after posting a site review on my new blog and the comment was bizarre. Not obvious spam. But not a comment that was relevant to the post, either. Something about “we can’t guarantee the privacy policy of this site” or something. And then of course the lovely link to their own site. Uh, yeah…watch my hand slowly move over to “delete…”

Commenting for no reason is one of the things that a lot of bloggers don’t realize. They think commenting on other blog is a key to get traffic because a lot of sites say that, but its not. Posting quality comment is what get traffic.

true. i think i’d feel uncomfortable leaving a link in a comment. wouldn’t want the blogger to think i’m abusing his/her site, especially if it’s do follow.

i’m all for disagreement and debate. i just prefer that it be carried out in a civil manner as well. there’s no need to push and shove.
